    Jehu Engle, a farmer, was killed in a horse and wagon accident at home.
    His wife, Anna Rebecca Quicksall, became a farmer managing the farm and
    hiring men to do the farm work. All the children were born in Glendale,
    New Jersey.
    Retha Batten writes in an email on August 10, 1998:
    I have been studying some of the hundreds of documents that were saved in
    the attic of my parents' home. The first deed is 1813. The second is
    1819. The many mortgages tell quite a story. In 1861, my grandfather,
    Jehu, owed his mother Catherine Fowler Engle and his sister $8700.00. How
    in the world, could a person pay off that kind of mortgage in 1861? My
    grandmother, Anna Rebecca Quicksall Engle, managed to pay off her
    deceased husband's mortages and had the farm free of debt. What a woman!
    She became the farmer the same as her mother-in-law Catherine became the
    farmer--or farm manager.
