Irene Roop, 91, formerly of New Windsor, Chevy Chase and Hartford, Conn., died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at St. Catherine?s Nursing Center in Emmitsburg. Born April 27, 1917, in New Windsor, she was the daughter of the late Preston B. and Nettie Brown Roop. She worked with children for many years and started a children?s garden club and a volunteer library in Union Bridge, as a young girl. She attended Towson State Teachers College. She worked for the District of Columbia Public Library system and as a governess for several families before joining the children?s division of the Hartford Connecticut Public Library, where she organized story book groups for children and served for 20 years. After their retirements, she and her sister resided in Chevy Chase and shared a summer cottage in Marshfield, Mass. She became a resident of St. Catherine?s Nursing Center in 2004. She enjoyed spending time with children, books and all animals, especially dogs, cats and birds. Surviving are sisters Julia R. Cairns, Esther R. Hough and Doris R. Wege; a brother, Charles D. Roop; 12 nieces and nephews; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Evelyn R. Miller and Kitty R. Obermiller; brothers John P. and Louise G. Roop; and one nephew. Memorial services will be held at St. Catherine?s at a later date. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Catherine?s Nursing Center, 331 S. Seton Ave., Emmitsburg, MD 21727.
