J. S. Pennock, Steel Pioneer, Dies at 93
Coatesville, Toady - John Shaffner Pennock, 93-year-old pioneer in American steel industry, died yesterday after a short illness.
Educated at Bucknell University and Swarthmore College, he later became associated with his father, Joseph Pennock, as superintendent of the Valley Steel Mills where plates were rolled for the Monitor, fighting ship of Civil War renown.
Steel used in the building of the Brooklyn Bridge and in boiler plates for the Pennsylvania Railroad was rolled at the Valley Mill, which later was sold to Worth Brothers.
Pennock is survived by three sons and two daughters: Joseph L., Pittsburgh; E. Windle, Springfield, Mass.; Charles A., New York; Anna Pennock and Mrs. Frederick S. Bonsall, both of Coatesville.
