Mr. Howard Clifton Roop, 92, a well-known grocer, formerly of New Windsor, died Saturday, Dec. 7, after an illness of several months, at the Brethren Home, Cross Keys, Pa., where he had lived since Aug. 16, 1985. Twice married, his first wife was Clara Hockensmith Roop, who died in 1959. His second wife was Carrie Miller Roop, who died in 1982. Born Dec. 28, 1898, in New Windsor, be was a son of the late John Hamilton and Annie Devilbiss Roop. Mr. Roop was a second-generation grocer with his family business, which was established hi 1898. The store is the oldest grocery store in Carroll County, and was operated by his son, Cassell, until 1989, and now is owned and operated by his grandson, Neal C. Roop, continuing as Roop's Grocery.
Mr. Roop was a member of Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren, the Grocers' Associations on the county and state levels, a charter member of the New Windsor Lions Club and the New Windsor Volunteer Fire Co. He had served as treasurer of the Pipe Creek Cemetery Association. He was involved in community baseball for many years, beginning in the 1930s.
Surviving are two daughters, Betty J. Gueniera of Escondido, Calif., and Ann E. Eberly of Gaithersburg; a son, H. Cassell Roop of New Windsor; four stepchildren; a sister, Anna Roop of Cross Keys; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at the New Windsor funeral home of D.D. Hartzler. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the funeral home, with Mr. Roop's pastor, the Rev. Stanley Diehl, officiating. Interment will be in Pipe Creek Cemetery, Linwood.
