Mr. Thomas Leonard Devilbiss, 90, well-known life-time resident of Uniontown, died Friday, June 15, at the Carroll County General Hospital after an extended illness. His wife, Hilda Eckard Devilbiss, predeceased him in 1955.
Born July 27,1893, in Carroll County, Mr. Devilbiss was the son of the late Jacob Snader and Luella Zile Devilbiss. Mr. Devilbiss was owner and operator of T.L. Devilbiss General Store and Post Office in Uniontown for 60 years. He was a former school bus contractor for Carroll County schools from the late 1920s to 1957. He was a life member of the Uniontown United Methodist Church, having served as trustee and former administrative board member. He was a bank director of the former Uniontown Bank for many years and of the Taneytown Bank and Trust Company until he retired in 1982. Mr. Devilbiss was also superintendent and treasurer of the Uniontown Methodist Cemetery until 1982.
Surviving him are two daughters, Miss Caroline Devilbiss, Uniontown, and Mrs. Janet Justice, Taneytown; two sons, Robert F. Devilbiss and Charles T. Devilbiss, both of Uniontown; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Grace Smelser of Uniontown and one brother, Bernard Devilbiss of Westminster.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday, June 18, at the New Windsor Funeral Home of D.D. Hartzler. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, in the Uniontown United Methodist Church by his pastor, the Rev. Jane Billingslea, assisted by the Rev. Tom Miller. Interment will be in Uniontown Lutheran Cemetery.
