Mr. Robert Franklin Devilbiss, 71, of 885 Trevanion Road, Uniontown, died Saturday, April 24, at his home, after an extended illness. He was the husband of Elizabeth E. Devilbiss. They were married for 49 years.
Born March 10, 1928, in Uniontown, he was a son of the late Thomas L. and Hilda Eckard Devilbiss.
Mr. Devilbiss graduated from New Windsor High School in 1945. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Uniontown, where he formerly served on the church council and the oemetery board. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps just after World War II. He was a well-known businessman as owner-operator, with his sister Caroline, of T.L. Devilbiss general store and post office in Uniontown. Mr. Devilbiss was a Carroll County school bus contractor and driver for 45 years, driving many years for the Uniontown and New Windsor schools and more recently for Northwest Middle School and Frances Scott Key High School. He had been honored in March 1998 by the Carroll County Bus Contractors with an achievement award for his years of service following his retirement in 1997.
He was a member of Hesson-Snider American Legion Post, Taneytown.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Robert S. Devilbiss of Uniontown; two sisters, Caroline Devilbiss and Janet Justice, both of Uniontown; one sister-in-law, Kathleen Devilbiss of Uniontown: and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Devilbiss was preceded in death by one brother, Charles T. Devilbiss, in 1997.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. April 26, at Hartzler Funeral Home. 310 Church St., New Windsor. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, at the funeral home. Mr. Devilbiss' pastor, the Rev. Howard W. Miller, will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Uniontown.
