George Balch NEVIN

Easton, Pa. Apr. 17 - George Balch Nevin, 77, composer of sacred music, whose cantatas and other compositions were sung in hundreds of churches throughout the land on Easter, died today.

Nevin was born at Shippensburg and attended the Cumberland Valley normal school and Lafayette College.

For 35 years he conducted a wholesale paper business in Easton, retiring in 1919. He is survived by his widow and two children, George Balch Nevin, organist and composer of Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pa., and Miss Shirley Dean Nevin, of Easton, and also by a brother, former Mayor David W. Nevin, of Easton.

"The Adoration" and "The Crucified", the words of which were written by Mrs. Nevin, his wife, and the cantata for general use, "The Crown of Life", were among the best known of Nevin's compositions.

During the world years Nevin organized for patriotic rallies the Victory Drummers, composed of forty men whose average age was about 60 years of age. He also composed the music for "When the Flag Goes By", which had an immense sale during the war.
