McFarland, Mary M. [Rothrock]

Mrs. Mary M. McFarland

After a lingering and painful illness of about five years, Mrs. Mary M. McFarland, of West Chester, passed quietly away in death at her home last evening, at about 8:40 o'clock. The deceased was a daughter of Dr. A. and Phebe B. Rothrock and was born at McVeytown, Mifflin County, August 12, 1842. She was accordingly in her 56th year.

The deceased was a woman of fine mental and moral endowment and received her education at Mt. Holyoke Seminary, in Massachusetts, from which institution she graduated in 1864. She was married to David M. McFarland on September 11, 1868, and came to West Chester to live. She had ever since had her home here and was for many years closely identified by its social life. Mrs. McFarland united with the First Presbyterian Church and took an active interest in all that concerned its welfare. She was a devoted Christian, a fond mother and wife and a valued neighbor and friend. She was with her family attending the World's Fair in Chicago, when she was attacked by what appeared to be rheumatism and was brought home in much suffering. From that time until her death no relief was experienced. Although her suffering was intense, she bore it patiently and uncomplainingly.

She leaves to survive her besides her husband, three children, Mrs. Isaac G. Reynolds and two sons, Charles T. and George K. McFarland. Charles and his brother-in-law, Isaac G. Reynolds, are partners in conducting the West Chester Steam Laundry. George K. is with his father in the banking business and is registered as a student at law with George M. Rupert, Esq.
